Letter to Westwood Members, January 2010
Congratulations to our Kids!
Jackson Glimpel of Pee Wee 1 had shootout victory at the Mac’s Midget Tournament. Congratulations, Jackson, who credits his coaches, and spends much time practicing at the Triwood Outdoor Arena.
Alistair Butt of Pee Wee 1 moved through the Provincial Pee Wee Skills Challenge to compete in the Flames Skills Competition. Every event that the Flames competed in, the Pee Wee kids did also...competing against the other Peewees. Alistair Butt, 12, from St. Andrews, was Team White. He was given a jersey that matched the Flames and had his name bar on it as well as his #4. The scores from the Pee Wee players and the Flames were added together to determine the overall winner. His team won and he will now get to spend time with the Calgary Flames in the dressing room.
Equipment
Westwood had a draw to determine which four teams would receive new jerseys this year. Home jerseys are in for those Pee Wee and Atom teams who won the draw. We are waiting for the away jerseys. (PeeWee 4 bought its own jerseys donated by parents and Novice jerseys are sponsored by Hockey Calgary this year.).
Coaching
There was a coaches meeting before Christmas. Hockey Calgary is holding at clinic for Westwood coaches on the January 19th. Expected are 20 to 30 coaches. Hockey Calgary does this at no cost to us.
The defense clinics are up and running and will include Atom level players this time. The first 24 to e-mail back are included. The goalie clinics are also ongoing. There’s been great feedback about both these additional clinics.
There will be another coaches meeting at the beginning of February. The goal is to ensure that our coaches will have access to a good storehouse of material.
Mid Year Coaches Evaluation
There were 75 responses (out of 500 families). These include 20 from Timbits, 15 from novice, 16 from Atom, 19 for Peewee, 4 for Bantam, 0 for Midget, 1 for Junior. Responses from players/parents were overwhelmingly positive.
Ice Scheduling/Registrar
We’ve had some expressions of interest for these two crucial positions and our President Gerry Mumford will meet with the prospective volunteers. We are still interested in meeting with prospective volunteers about these positions. Please continue to approach us for these and other key volunteer positions. Contact: gerry.mumford@contalloy.com
Ice Time
The board has heard from parents who think our kids don’t have enough ice time, and others who think it’s too much. The board is developing a survey on this topic and will seek your feedback in the future.
Our Numbers
Of the Westwood players, they split like this:
23 percent (131 players), Triwood
30 percent (161 players) West Hillhurst
47 percent (263 players) Brentwood.
Westwood has 34 teams.
Westwood Alumni at Mac’s Midget Tournament
